Stanley Kubrick: His style and trademarks and influence on directors today

What makes Stanley Kubrick's direction unique? What were his common themes, messages and values? How has he influenced directors today?

Proposed Film: 2001: a space odyssey

Similar Films:
  • Under The Skin
  • Ex Machina
  • Interstellar
Both Under The Skin and Ex Machina have similar themes to 2001 in that it is about a different being learning what it is to be human, Ex Machina combines that also with the liminality and claustrophobia of The Shining

  1. Good that we've got you started now Tom. Can you look at my blog and complete the 'work in progress' post that I asked the others to do. We'll talk more tomorrow.

  2. Suggestions for your next targets for next week:
    - write/find a definition of auteurs in film
    - find out what people say about Kubrick's auteur signature (secondary materials)
    - do primary research on a key scene from your focus film (when you decide)
    - record everything on your blog - think of this as a digital log of your research, but use labels to organise it.

  3. Tom - you need to be updating this regularly through the week as independent learning. The lessons are a supervisory check and guidance, but it all rests on you progressing the work and recording it here. Let's talk later.

  4. I think your title should be 'The Influential Style of Stanley Kubrick'. Keep on deciding on the focus film, but this could even change later - and then keep looking for supplementary films that several secondary sources discuss in relation to Kubrick. This will support your primary research.
